Washington, D.C. – In response to a House vote last night freezing federal pay for an additional year, National Federation of Federal Employees National President William R. Dougan issued the following statement:

"We are disappointed to see the result of Wednesday’s vote. Extending the federal pay freeze by an additional year would cost federal workers and their families tens of thousands of dollars over the course of their careers, on top of tens of thousands more in forgone income resulting from the current two-year freeze. This is a damaging development for the two million middle class federal workers struggling to get by in this economy just like anyone else. A third year of frozen pay for a federal firefighter making $36,000 a year could mean the difference between making the housing payment and going into foreclosure. For a VA nurse making $42,000 a year it could mean the difference between sending her kids to college, and delaying their dreams another year. Extending the federal pay freeze would have a deep and lasting impact on the lives of millions of public servants across America - a reality our leaders in Washington must never forget.

Worse yet was the way this bill was packaged - requiring lawmakers to vote on both a federal worker and congressional pay freeze at the same time. If Congress was serious about helping the middle class, they would freeze their own paychecks without dipping into the pockets of food and safety inspectors, border patrol agents, and VA nurses at the same time. Federal workers are sick and tired of politicians trying to score cheap political points off their backs. They come to work every day to serve their fellow Americans, and they do it with pride and distinction.  Yesterday, Congress failed them.

Nonetheless, we take consolation in knowing that many of the votes in support of this bill had nothing to do with supporting further pay freezes for federal workers. This vote was about election year politics, plain and simple.”

States should be their represenatives salary, retirement and perks
Why is the fed paying congress and senators salaries and retirements? These people represent their states, the state governors should setting their salaries and determining what retirement they'll receive.

The Hypocrisy Continues
Once again the middle class is assaulted with nothing more than lip service from the very people who were hired to represent us. The continual chant that they are "fighting for the middle class "cannot be more obviously contradicted than by this vote to continue to freeze the salaries of so many dedicated and struggling middle class Federal employees. It is shameful and will not be forgotten come election time!

We ARE the middle class
This is such a short sighted attempt at legislation. It is clear they don't care about the economy or the middle class. Federal workers have career goals, financial goals and family goals just like everyone else, we are a next door neighbor, the person at the resturant or filling our gas tank. This attempt at legislation is cutting into our dreams for a good future for outselves and our families. Federal workers are a majority of the only middle class left in this country. A large percentage of middle class jobs have been losted in the last decade or so. A sad state of affairs that our futures can be held hostage to political games.

This is sad
I am saddened to see this day come as I am a single mom of 5 children. I am a federal employee and count on that extra COLA to maintain. The saddest part about all of this is that they are raising the federal daycare that my children attend, the taxes that I pay, the insurance that I pay for and the groceries that we eat all while I am making $37,240 a year. Having a federal job I thought that I was secure enough to say I can survive. Yes, at least I have a job, but do I feel bad for having a degree and working? No I don't. I need that to survive. Congress you are not seeing the big picture. When you are driving your fancy cars and eating at fancy restaurants, think of me and my kids barely getting by. Sincerely yours, a working mom of 5.

Wow, what a surprise
Yet again, the federal employees have to shoulder this burdern. Three years? So much for retiring with the three highest years, it just set everyone back that was considering retiring. When will the 534 people that run the finances of this country figure it out? Amazing. Disgusting

Pay Freeze
This is an unfair burden on the federal workers. I vote and I will remember those who voted to freeze my pay!
