Late
last week, the Senate confirmed John Berry as
the next Director of the Office of Personnel
Management (OPM).
Confirmed by unanimous
voice vote, Berry expressed his enthusiasm for
assuming the new post:
“I
look forward to getting to work with the great
men and women at OPM and to advancing the
Presidents goal of ensuring that our country’s
best and brightest continue to be drawn into
the service of our country,” said
Berry.
Berry
brings with him to OPM decades of public
service experience. In his most recent role as
Director of the National Zoological Park, he
resolved a variety of management issues through
implementation of a strategic plan and 20-year
capital master plan. He also served as Director
of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
and Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management
and Budget at the Department of the Interior in
the Clinton Administration. As Legislative
Director to Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Berry was
instrumental in the formulation of the Federal
Employees Pay Comparability Act of 1990, a bill
that established locality pay for the federal
workforce.
“John
Berry’s stellar record of public service and
understanding of crucial federal employee
issues give me great confidence that he will be
a partner in our efforts to build a fairer and
more just federal workplace,” said Richard N.
Brown, National President of the National
Federation of Federal Employees. “We
congratulate him on his confirmation and look
forward to working with him in the years to
come.”
