NFFE-IAM Talks NSPS With Senator Collins’ Office

Yesterday in Washington, NFFE National President/DBR Richard N. Brown, IAM Director of Government Employees Frank Carelli, and NFFE Legislative Director Randy Erwin met with the office of Susan Collins (R-ME), Chairperson of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and majority member on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Collins, along with Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) authored the language that gave the Department of Defense (DoD) authority to role out the National Security Personnel System (NSPS).  Since then, Collins has been a chief advocate of the Defense unions’ contention that DoD has overstepped their authority with the NSPS proposal.  NSPS, Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), and the Senate Defense Authorization (to be addressed in September) were the primary topics of discussion in the meeting.

“Collins is absolutely critical to our ability to stop NSPS,” said Brown.  “She is on record saying that DoD has gone beyond the authority given to them by Congress.  We know she is an ally.”
