NFFE Adds NASA Bargaining Unit in Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral, FL – For the first time in 48 years of existence, the employees at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Exchange unit at Kennedy Space Station will have a union.  In an election held just before the holidays, employees in the bargaining unit voted better than 3-to-1 in favor of the union, granting NFFE its first bargaining unit at NASA.

The bargaining unit of 48 employees is part of the non-appropriated fund, which has many interesting implications for the employees there.  Unlike the majority of federal installations, wages can be negotiated in the collective bargaining agreement, making the direct benefit to the employees clearly demonstrated by an increase in pay.

The primary organizer for NFFE-IAM during the NASA campaign was Business Representative John Griffin.  Griffin will be headed back to Cape Canaveral soon to negotiate the much-anticipated contract at the NASA Exchange.  "The wages have been down for years at this installation," said Griffin.  "This group has had no fair and equal say in the workplace, and now that's all going to change."

"We are very happy to be representing the new NFFE-IAM members at the NASA Exchange," said NFFE-IAM President/DBR Richard Brown.  "The group spoke decisively in favor of our union, and now we are going to go to bat for them."
