NFFE Participates in Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Parade

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

On November 10, representatives from the National Federation of Federal Employees proudly participated in the 25th Anniversary Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parade in Washington, DC.  NFFE, along with a several or our sister unions, co-sponsored a labor float in the parade.

The parade, organized by the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Vietnam Veterans Assistance Fund, commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated in Washington, DC over Veterans’ Day Weekend in 1982.

The Vietnam Memorial, a black granite wall etched with the names of the more than 58,000 Americans who lost their lives during the Vietnam War, serves as a place of healing for Vietnam veterans and an inspiring reminder to us all of the sacrifices made by our armed forces.

A number of anniversary activities were held in downtown Washington, DC throughout the day, including an opening ceremony prior to the parade, the parade itself, and a post-parade reception and concert on the Washington Monument grounds.

NFFE members were some of the estimated 50,000 participants who marched or rode on the labor float in the parade.  Other participants included Vietnam veterans marching in various contingents, dignitaries and elected officials, marching bands, active duty military members, among others.  Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined Connecticut Avenue to watch the procession and celebrate our Vietnam veterans.

“NFFE is honored to have been involved in this wonderful event,” said NFFE National President Richard N. Brown.  “We are proud to represent many veterans, as well as many wonderful women and men who provide healthcare to our returning servicemen.  The sacrifices made by these individuals should be recognized and remembered, and I am proud that this organization was able to play a role in this event and express our gratitude for their service.”
